About Us
The idea of Men’s Sheds started in Australia around 1999. It then spread to New Zealand, Ireland, the UK and Canada. Since then, Sheds have been cropping up across Europe and the USA with a total of around 2,000.
The UK Men’s Shed Association (UKMSA) is the support body of sheds across the UK, of which Dereham Men’s Shed is a member.
Dereham Men’s Shed was formed in 2018/19 and in the early days when we would meet at a local church. Covid came along during which time we met using Zoom but eventually once things returned to normal we put out a request for space. We were delighted when Dereham Theatre Company offered us the use of an old storeroom and the use of their kitchen. Finally we were able to set up a workshop, and this is where we are today.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, we are now fast running out of space. We are having to turn away projects because the workshop is so small and we have to limit the number of people working there for safety reasons.
The kitchen was also limiting the number of people joining us, so much so that we had to move to larger premises.
Dereham Cancer Care came to our rescue and offered us the use of their building for our Wednesday afternoon get-togethers. This has been a far more comfortable space in which to meet.
